Kenan-Irri, an oil producing Isoko community in Bayelsa State have issued a heartfelt plea to H.E Douye Diri & H.E Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo for urgent intervention to save the community from the ravages of erosion.
Within the last one year, 16 houses, and the Kenan-Irri community market – a crucial source of livelihood for the women and local businesses, as well as boreholes, have succumbed to the relentless force of erosion, resulting in the tragic loss of several lives.Several leaders of the community have brought the attention of NDDC , AGIP and also the Indian company SEEPCO/NNPC whose dredging of the Forcados river escalated the impact on the community, but all have fell on deaf ears.
The representative of Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency Hon Fred Agbedi of House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria visited the community to commission the community health care centre, witnessed first hand the devastation, and understood the urgency.
We are appealing to the Bayelsa Government New Media to support us by reinforcing the riverbanks, especially now that Sen. Henry Seriake Dickson the former Governor of Bayelsa State is the current chairman of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Ecological Control.
Remember we brought to your attention this same coastal erosion menace in another Isoko speaking community Anibeze within the same banks of the Forcados River.
We need all the help we can get and we won't stop till something permanent is done about it.
